Exterior waterproofing addresses the problem from the outside: a trench is dug along the foundation down to the footing, the wall is cleaned and sealed with a waterproof membrane, and — in most complete systems — a drainage board and exterior drain tile are added to carry groundwater away before it ever reaches the concrete. Because it works on the source rather than the symptom, it’s generally the most thorough waterproofing method available, and it’s also the most invasive and highest-cost.
This approach is usually the right call when the problem is structural or severe: active water intrusion through the wall itself (not just the floor-wall joint), visible foundation cracking tied to hydrostatic pressure, or a below-grade addition, egress window, or walkout that needs to be properly waterproofed from new construction.
It’s worth being direct about the tradeoffs: exterior work requires excavation equipment, disturbs landscaping near the foundation, and takes longer than an interior system. Membrane & Drainage Board
Apply a rubberized or elastomeric waterproof membrane, then add a dimpled drainage board so groundwater flows down to the footing drain instead of pressing against the wall.
Exterior Drain Tile & Backfill
Install or tie into exterior drain tile at the footing, then backfill in stages with proper compaction so the yard doesn’t settle unevenly afterward.

How is this different from an interior drain?
An interior drain manages water after it reaches the inside edge of your foundation. Exterior waterproofing stops it from getting into the wall assembly at all. Both can be effective — the right choice depends on where and how your basement is actually leaking.
Will this damage my landscaping?
Plantings and hardscaping directly along the excavated section will be disturbed. A thorough contractor will walk you through what’s in the trench path before digging and discuss restoration afterward.
How long does exterior waterproofing take?
For a single-wall section, typically a few days including excavation, membrane work, and backfill. A full-perimeter job on an older home takes longer and is scheduled around weather.
